How important is it to choose the right battery for your new energy vehicle?

How important is it to choose the right battery for a new energy vehicle? Many people have probably wondered about the ‘battery type’ option when purchasing a new energy vehicle. These two types of batteries are currently the most mainstream and widely used lithium-ion battery types in new energy vehicles!

Lithium iron phosphate batteries use phosphorus and iron in their cathodes, materials that sound inexpensive. In contrast, ternary lithium batteries use cobalt, a rare metal, in their cathodes, making them more expensive. Additionally, the production technology has a high technical barrier, resulting in a higher production cost for ternary lithium batteries.

The energy density of lithium iron phosphate batteries is approximately 110 Wh/kg, while ternary lithium batteries typically have an energy density of 200 Wh/kg, nearly double that of lithium iron phosphate batteries. Therefore, for the same range, ternary lithium batteries are lighter and smaller, which is why long-range versions of vehicles mostly use ternary lithium batteries.

At -20°C, lithium iron phosphate batteries can only release 55% of their capacity, while ternary lithium batteries can reach 70%! In winter, ternary lithium batteries offer longer range and greater stability. So, for those living in northern regions, this is an important point to remember.

When the charging rate is below 10C, meaning it takes more than 6 minutes to fully charge, there is no significant difference in charging efficiency between the two battery types. Only when the charging rate can reach full charge in under 6 minutes does the lithium iron phosphate battery show a significant drop in charging efficiency. However, the charging time for new energy vehicles is far longer than 6 minutes, so the difference in charging efficiency is not significant.

How important is it to choose the right battery for your new energy vehicle? Alright, now you finally understand the differences between ternary lithium and lithium iron phosphate batteries! The biggest differences lie in cost, range, and safety. You should prioritise these factors when making your choice.
